twitter marketing

Have you ever looked at Twitter and thought, “how do people keep up with conversations on this platform?” Have you wondered how you can jump into the lively tweets streaming through your feed? Do you worry you won’t get noticed with all of the noise on this platform?

Those are all valid questions and ones that many marketers ask themselves when approaching Twitter. The platform is powerful but only when used correctly. To be effective, you need to have a strong understanding of what people are looking for when logging into their account.

Here are five Twitter marketing tips that’ll get you noticed and get you more leads.

1. Add some personal flair to retweets.

Almost all blog posts and articles have a button attached that makes them easy to share. Just click the button and tweet. In seconds, you’ve shared more content with your fans and followers.

The problem with automatically tweeting out the title of the blog post and credit back to the author is it’s boring. No one notices, no one cares, and it gets very little engagement.

When you add your personal flair, such as a thought, question, or idea to support the blog post, people notice. You intrigue the blogger by your interest in their topic. Your followers get their wheels turning thinking about the topic in more depth. Best of all? You position your brand as a thought leader because you do more than simply share someone else’s content.

2. Let your personality shine.

Business doesn’t have to be boring. In fact, it shouldn’t be boring. Boring tweets get glossed over.

When you let your personality shine through your Twitter account, people notice. You become more interesting, more compelling, and more engaging. Twitter is the perfect platform to show off your brand’s fun side. By design, it is social and interactive. Stiff, professional tweets are unwelcome. Write posts that give followers a sense for the person and team behind the brand.

3. Spark a little bit of controversy (in the right way).

You know that you should be insightful on Twitter, but how about sparking a little bit of controversy?

For years, business communicators avoided controversy like the plague. Companies thought that, to succeed, they had to appeal to the masses. Controversy made that impossible.

Now, more brands intrigue followers when they bring up a potentially controversial topic. Use this strategy with care, but don’t avoid it. If there is an issue your brand stands firm on, tweet about it. Be prepared to back up your statements and defend your case in a respectful manner.

When you start a thought provoking conversation, people will notice. Even if people don’t always agree with where you stand, they will respect you for taking a stance. As long as you are civil in your controversial statements, you will get attention and respect from your Twitter followers.

4. Engage in trending conversations.

On the left side of your Twitter feed, you will see trending topics. These come from hashtags that people are using to talk about a specific topic. Buzz-meterThey also include the overarching stories that have people buzzing.

When relevant, use them to form your own tweets. If your brand has something valuable to add to the conversation already happening, chime in. You might reach a new crowd of people this way. You might also establish a new level of respect among your current followers for participating in a trending conversation.

It’s imperative that we insert a word of caution here. Engaging with trending topics that are not relevant is a PR disaster in the making. If you don’t have anything valuable or useful to add to the conversation, don’t. Only add your two cents when it makes sense.

5. Use multi-media in your tweets.

Twitter recently started allowing brands to incorporate visual content into their tweets. You can now tweet banners, pictures, videos and more. Using images usually attracts more attention than static posts.

There are numerous ways you can incorporate more visuals into your tweets.

  • Take pictures at an event and tweet about it.
  • Include an image with the headline to your latest blog post in your tweet.
  • Share graphs and charts that offer meaningful insights.

No matter how you use images in your tweets, they’re bound to get you noticed.
